Advanced Technology – The Surgical Navigation System

The Orthopedic Surgical Navigation System provides computer-assisted navigation technology using tracking devices that provide our surgeons with a fuller picture of a patient’s joint mechanics. With this information, the surgeon can make adjustments within degrees to ensure the new joint has the stability and range of motion needed for a successful replacement. Our orthopedic surgeons have this technology available to them at United Regional, the only hospital in Wichita Falls and the surrounding eight counties to offer such a system.

As the surgeon moves an instrument within the joint, infrared trackers calculate its position and wireless instruments instantaneously transfer the data to a computer in the operating room. This data is then displayed on a monitor as an interactive anatomical model — or “blueprint” — that shows the surgeon all angles, lines and measurements of the patient’s unique anatomy. The surgeon consults the monitor while replacing the diseased bone with artificial joint components, often called prostheses or implants. The virtual model helps the surgeon make necessary adjustments to the implants for optimal stability and range of motion.
